AID BY MRS. C. W. FLOWERS RESULTED IN NEW LAW
The death in Jena, Louisiana, last Wednesday of Mrs. Alette Thompson Flowers, 60, has removed a most valuable citizen, who was known state-wide for her efforts to provide tenure for teachers of the state. Her efforts met with many rebuffs but in the end succeeded.

She was born in LIttle Rock, Arkansas, and her family removed to Monroe soon after her birth. She attended schools here and was graduated from Ouachita Parish High School, and later was educated at Northwestern State College, formerly called State Normal. She began to teach in LaSalle Parish in 1913. In 1917 she was married in Grace Episcopal Church in Monroe to C. W. Flowers.

Her efforts for a better system reached a statewide scale in 1921 at the Louisiana Constitutional Convention. Mrs. Flowers tried unsuccessfully to organize classroom teachers and demand tenure. He fight failed for the time being. However, not on to be easily discouraged, Mrs. Flowers began a methodical and persuasive campaign with all the teachers of the state. Her undying faith and stamina were never doubted. She began her long fight in 1921 and after much hard work, her relentless efforts paid off. Mrs. Flowers had much to do with bond issues passed for getting the fine school buildings of Jena and LaSalle Parish. She was directly responsible for getting Louisiana its present Teacher's Retirement Law in 1947. Besides being president of the Louisiana State Classroom Teachers Association for 4 of the past several years, she saw her dreams become a realization in 1947.

Mrs. Flowers was a member of the Louisiana Educational Association council, the Retirement Board, president of the LaSalle Parish Classroom Teachers, United School Committee, vice-president of the Alpha Beta Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma honorary society, and a member of Kappa Kappa Iota.
