He was a teacher in Hancock Co. before moving to Grainger Co. when Lon
was about 8 or 9 years old. He first moved to Bean Station and then
later to Avondale Springs in 1913 where he bought a large brick
plantation-style house that was built in 1839. The price of this large
histroric home plus over 300 acres around it was $10,000 at that time.
He later sold off $3,000 worth of the land to reduce his debt...and
still had 300 acres. He told his wife at one time that he aimed to stop
manual labor at the age of 40--a goal he reached--and to retire at 55--a
goal he missed by only one year. However, he kept up his business
interests to close to his death age age 94; was a founder of the
Citizens Bank of Rutledge and was on it's board for 45 years. He
enjoyed "trading", much like his first cousin once removed (my
grandfather). When he died he had 6 children, 14 gc, 19 ggc, and 4 gg gc.
In 1910 they are living in Grainger co. ED 52 Fam 92, saying married 14 years
with six children born and five still alive. Cornelia, Lonnie, Zetta,
Grover and Guy were at home. His will in bk 6, Grainger co. Tn p. 203 dated 6
Jun 1958 and probated 6 Mar 1970. One of the things he said that I thought was
interesting was, "I would love for my wife to divide as money is hard to keep."
