At an early age, William "Bill" David Shifflett became a member of the Murray Baptist Church. He was called to the Armed Forces on 15 December 1942 where he served three years with the 957th Ordinance Heavy Auto Maintenance Company in England, Normandy, and Frances. He was awarded the American Campaign Medal with four Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal. He owned and operated a Panhandle Service Station in Graham since 1948. Mr. Shifflett was a member of the Ligon Daniel Post No. 34 of the American Legion and a Junior Chamber of Commerce member.
Survived by his wife; his mother; five sisters - Mrs. L.R. Moreland, Mrs. L.C. Caussey, Mrs. Garland Enlow, Mrs. Henry Barnett, Mrs. O.A Jahwuke; three brothers - E.V. Shifflett, C.M. Shifflett, L.E. Shifflett.
