Octogenarian Passes Away
David Johnston, a resident of Cowlitz County since 1881, and well known in Kelso and vicinity, passed to the Great Beyond on Tuesday last at the ripe old age of 82 years. Mr. Johnston had been in poor health for several weeks, and his illness having fastened upon him, he was confined to his bed for some time before he died.
David Johnston was born in Cornwall, Canada, April 10, 1829 and died in Kelso, Wash, Nov 7, 1911. He was married in Knoxville, Illinois, Oct 29, 1856 to Miss Ellen M. Fuqua, and to this union was born nine children, five of whom survive. Mr. Johnston enlisted in the Union army in 1865. In 1881 he moved to Cowlitz county, and to Kelso in September 1891.
Beside his sorrowing wife, he leaves to morn his loss, five children. They are W. C. Johnston of Silverton, Oregon, C. C. Johnston of Ostrander, Mrs. Robert Jackson and John J. Johnston of Kelso and Mrs. J. M. Fletcher of Portland. Nineteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive him.
Funeral services conducted by Rev. T. M. Reese were held from the Robt. Jackson residence, Thursday afternoon at two o'clock and a large number of sorrowing friends followed the remains to their last resting place in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
