Tom J. Ayres of Gatesville, an 88-year-old retired farmer and longtime resident of Coryell County, died at 4 p. m. Thursday in a Temple hospital. His death was attributed to a heart ailment.
Funeral services were held at 1 p. m. Saturday in Scott's Funeral Home chapel and were conducted by Rev. Joe Broadway.
Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Ayres, born in Grimes County on March 20, 1884, came to Coryell County with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert H. Ayres, when he was a child.
He farmed in The Grove and Flat, communities until moving to Gatesville in 1967.
He was married to Bessie Coates on Sept. 6, 1911. He was a member of the Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Robert Joe Ayres of Gatesville; two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Rozell) Shelton and Mrs. Milton (Katie) Williamson, both of Gatesville; one brother, Bill Ayres of The Grove; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Rhoades of Gatesville; eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, 14 step-greatgrandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers for Mr. Ayres' funeral were Sybil Price, Bill Brown, J. W. Brown, Boge Brown, Bud Welch, Robert Autrey and Howard Holt.
