Robert Joseph "Joe" Ayres, 80, of Gatesville, died Saturday in a Temple hospital. Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Scott's Funeral Home in Gatesville with the Rev. Willie Clarke officiating. Burial followed in Restland Cemetery.
Mr. Ayres was born June 9, 1919 in The Grove to Thomas Jefferson and Bessie Coates Brown Ayres. He was a life-long resident of Coryell County.
After attending Hubbard School, he became a member of the William Conservation Corps training program. He married Mary Dorothy Fay Franklin on Sept. 20, 1940 in Flat.
During World War II, he served with the Medical Detachment Service Command Unit 1492 and was discharged Oct. 12, 1945 with the Good Conduct Medal. He was retired from civil service at Fort Hood.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Nov. 19, 1999, his parents and two sisters, Katie Marie Williamson and Rozell Shelton.
Survivors include daughters Mary Jo Reeter of Odessa, Doris Turner of Bryan and Pat Kasting and Bobbie Tippit, both of Gatesville; a son, Robert Dale Ayres of Temple; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Robert Dale Ayres, Robert Loyd Turner, Billy Tippit, Terry Tippit, Cody Tippit and Casey Ayres.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
