Wife of Silas Luie Harris
Mother of Ada Ethel Harris, Melba Harris, Lucile Harris & Clifford Eugene Harris.

Martha likely experienced postpartum psychosis after the birth of her fourth child and it was worsened when she became pregnant again with her fifth child. Her daughter Melba says after she became pregnant with her fifth child and she and her children were sent to live with her parents (likely due to her mental health). The cause of her death was hush hush and the children were told she bled to death which is unsupported by her death record. Melba recalled that the children were not told of her death until the day of the funeral.

Her children are found in the 1920 Leeds, Utah census living with their grandparents Brigham and Ada and their children. In 1930 her children Ada, Lucille and Eugene were living together as siblings in Salt Lake City. Melba was married in 1926 and had 2 children in the 1930 census. I remember my own mother saying that when her grandfather (Silas) remarried his new wife refused to parent his children and the children were farmed out to strangers and relatives. Some of the treatment the children received was very abusive and effected them for their entire lives.
