Wm Beck was born on the Atlantic waters coming from England on February 8, 1840 and came to Iowa in 1863. He bought a tract of land from Riley Jones now known at the Beck Homestead, living here until his death, May 4, 1925, being 85 years, 2 months and 26 days of age. In 1864 he was united in marriage to Martha Montgomery. To this union was born 4 children, Chas. Beck, who died in 1911; Mrs E??zia Brady; Mrs. Christian Glanz; Mr. Jas. Beck, all of Des Moines.

February 23, 1876 he was united in marriage to Abigail Fouch. To this union were born six children, 2 dying in infancy; Mrs. Flora Williams, of Des Moines, Mrs. Edgar Paterson, Mrs. Beverly Shahan and Mr. Fred Beck, all of Runnells; He was also step-father to Mrs. Shelt Bringoff of Nevada, Missouri, whom he regarded as one of his own children. He also leaves 21 grandchildren and 18 great grand-children. Mrs. Beck preceded her husband in death 2 years ago on their 47th wedding anniversary. Mr. Beck when 12 yrs of age journeyed from Maine with his parents to California by oxen team. In a few years he left his home and parents working his way eastward by driving the stage coach in Colorado and Utah and freighting from Des Moines to Ottumwa. He was in the Gold Rush to California in 1867. In early life he joined the Christian church later uniting with the Church of Christ at Camp Center in 1891 serving as Deacon for some time.
