Mother Celeste Hemmen

ATCHSON, KS.—
Mother Celeste Hemmen, 59, prioress of Mount St. Scholastica Convent, Atchison, passed away today at the convent. Mother Celeste had been in ill health for some time.
Born in Belgium, WI, she was the daughter of John and Catherine Weber Hemmen.
Mother Celeste entered the Benedictine sisterhood at Mount St. Scholastica here June 25, 1927. She made her first profession of vows, January 1, 1929, and took her perpetual vows January first, three years later.
A graduate of Catholic High School, Wichita, KS, Mother Celeste received a bachelor of arts degree from Mount St. Scholastica College, Atchison, and her master of science degree from Kansas State University, Manhattan, KS. She took post graduate work at Kansas State Teachers College, Pittsburg, KS.
In June, 1962, she was elected prioress of Mount St. Scholastica Convent and also became the third president of Mount St. Scholastica College. Her post as college president paralleled that held by her brother, the Rev. Alcuin Hemmen, O.S.B., President of St. Benedict's College, the Mount's twin college in Atchison.
Prior to her election, Mother Celeste was a teacher and principal and superioress of missions staffed by the Atchison Benedictine sisters. She spent 25 years in the schools of Kansas, four in Iowa and six in Missouri. In Kansas, she taught in Atchison, Seneca, Horton, Marysville, Shawnee and Kelly. The four years spent teaching in Iowa were at Portsmouth and Council Bluffs and while in Missouri she taught at Cathedral School in St. Joseph and in Wein and Kansas City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Catherine Weber Hemmen.
Besides her brother, the Rev. Alcuin Hemmen, Atchison; Mother Celeste is survived by four other brothers, Joe Hemmen, Omaha, NE, Victor Hemmen and George Hemmen, both of Wichita, KS, and Leo Hemmen, Colwich, KS; three sisters, Mrs. Antone Lauer and Mrs. Carl Zeller, both of Wichita, KS,and Sister Gemma Hemmen, Mount St. Scholastica.
There will be a requiem mass Wednesday evening at 7:30 in Mount St. Scholastica Chapel for the public. The funeral mass, for clergy and sisters only, will be Thursday at 11 in the school chapel.
Father Hemmen, will be the celebrant at both masses. The Rev. Edward J. Hunkeler, archbishop of the Kansas City, KS, diocese, will preside in the sanctuary Thursday and give the absolution following the mass. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.

Father Hemmen, will be the celebrant at both masses. The Rev. Edward J. Hunkeler, archbishop of the Kansas City, KS, diocese, will preside in the sanctuary Thursday and give the absolution following the mass. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
