In 1843, Michael Sauer was born in the city of Württemberg in the Kingdom of Prussia (now a part of Germany) to Johannes and Anna (Wolpert) Sauer. He had one brother, Johann, and one sister whose name is unknown. He was confirmed in the Lutheran Church early in his life. In Germany, he learned the trade of weaving.

In 1865 at the age of 22, Michael emigrated to the United States and arrived at the port of Castle Garden*, New York City, NY on 13 JUN 1865. He made his way to Indiana and there took out citizenship papers in 1866. He worked on a ranch for 10 years for $10 a month. He later told someone that in all that time he only bought himself a handkerchief. Given his propensity for thrift in later years, no one found it surprising.

In 1880, Michael Sauer bought a farm in Chariton, Missouri from Felix Grundy Walker for $850. Ironically, years later two of Michael's daughters (Rosa and Sophia) would marry two of Felix's sons (Edward and Guy).

On January 6, 1881, Michael Sauer married Mrs. Katherine (Roderman) Hodge. They had 4 daughters: Anna (5 NOV 1881, married Swan); Rosa (19 FEB 1883, married Walker);
Sophia (21 APR 1886, married Walker) and Alice 12 NOV 1882(died 13 DEC 1900, one month after her 18th birthday).

In the estate of Michael's brother, Johann Sauer of Hamburg, Germany, $2,000 was given to Michael. He purchased the apple orchard in Chariton County, MO from Ed Knight with the money. His granddaughter, Dora Kathern Walker Barnes, said she remembered from pictures that her grandfather, Michael Sauer, had a long black beard. She also recalled him walking down the middle of the main street of Brunswick with his apple cart calling out, "Apples! Apples for sale!"

Michael lost his sight during the final year of his life. In November of 1928 he was taken ill with a bout of pneumonia from which he never recovered. He died at his home on April 10, 1929. The estate of Michael Sauer was handled by R. W. Beneke.

*Castle Garden was located on the southwest tip of Manhattan in Battery Park. All passengers were listed on the ship manifest (or passenger list).
