Born in in Davos,in 1849
he went out to California.
Went blind at the
age of seventy but quickly
taught himself Braille.
On his father's death in
1864,he succeeded him as
consul general from Switzerland,
and held that office until 1881.
He was one of the incorporators
of the American Red Cross
Society, an early and active member
of the American Forestry Association.
A dear friend of Helen Keller.
