Kate Doyle was born in Ireland sometime between 1858 and 1862. She sometimes went by "Katie" but her first name was Katherine or Catherine (most likely spelled "Katherine" as reported on her husband's death certificate). Her father's name was John Doyle and she had a younger sister named Mary.

Kate Doyle immigrated to the United States in about 1878 and later became a naturalized citizen (before 1930). She married John Joseph Murphy (also an Irish immigrant) at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Holyoke, Massachusetts on February 11, 1879.

Kate and John Murphy had either 10 or 13 children (there is a discrepancy between the 1900 and 1910 censuses as to the number of children born to Kate Murphy). About six or seven of their children survived until adulthood: Thomas W. (1879-bef.1900), John J. (1881-aft.1945), Stephen H. (1882-abt.1949), Mary H. (1883-1929), Margaret "May" Rose (1885-abt.1931), Nellie (1890-abt.1952), and Daniel C. (1891-abt.1963).

After marrying, Kate and John Murphy moved to West Springfield, Massachusetts and were members of Immaculate Conception [Catholic] Church. Kate died at their home on Baldwin Street in West Springfield on June 5, 1945 at about the age of 86.
