Roman Catholic Cardinal. He was a German Cardinal who made significant contributions to the Roman Catholic Church. Before dedicating himself to the church, he graduated from the Philosophical Faculty of Paderborn in Lyon, France, and the University of Mainz. He was ordained to the priesthood on December 21, 1961. He was appointed an Auxiliary bishop of Paderborn and Titular Bishop of Naissus by Pope Paul VI on October 27, 1975. He was also appointed as the Vice-President of the Pontifical Council for the Laity in 1980 and later the President of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum. He became an Archbishop on December 2, 1995, and was created Cardinal-Deacon of S. Lorenzo in Piscibus by Pope Benedict XVI in the consistory of 24 November 2007. When he turned 80 on 5 September 2014, he ceased to be a member of these dicasteries. He passed away in Rome, Italy at the age of 89.
