His father was a pharmacist, Dan began writing during his teenage years, when he wrote columns for his high school newspaper. He acquired experience as a sports writer with The Indianapolis Star and following graduation from Columbia College, he had positions with the publications The New York Times Magazine and Harpers, prior to penning his first non-fiction work "Island in the City" (1959). During the course of his career, he wrote more than a dozen books and novels. Additionally, Wakefield produced the TV series "James at 16" (1977 to 1978) and penned the screenplay for the film version of "Going All The Way." His best-selling novel "Starting Over" (1973), was made into a 1977 motion picture which starred Burt Reynolds, Jill Clayburgh and Candice Bergen.
