He decided to retire after the 1974 season, but his name remains etched in the Indiana Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 1993. During his high school days at Muncie Central, he earned 3 letters in football, basketball, and track, making him a versatile athlete. He was named team MVP in football, basketball, and track 1965-1966, and was also UPI All-State and All-Conference 2 years in football as a quarterback and All-Conference and All-State as a guard in basketball.
