Actor. He was best known to British television viewers as the booming-voice butcher Fred Elliott on the long-running ITV soap opera "Coronation Street" from 1994 to 2006. He worked as a policeman before fully entering the world of acting. His acting debut came in the 1954 film "Eight O'Clock Walk." His later film credits would include such titles as "Robbery," "Before Winter Comes," "Waterloo," "A Clockwork Orange," "Gandhi," "Hudson Hawk," "Tom & Viv," and "Loch Ness." In 1966, he made his television debut on the series "Redcap." Besides "Coronation Street," he went on to appear in such television series as "Nearest and Dearest," "Manhunt," "Tightrope," "Crown Court," "1990," "Yes Minister," and "Parnell & The Englishwoman."
