Born Arthur Leonard Swanson, he attended Neville High School in Louisiana and later enrolled at the Louisiana State University. Signed by the Pittsburgh Pirates as an amateur free agent in 1955, he made his Major League debut prior to turning nineteen on September 10th, 1955. In 1957, he produced career-highs with 3 wins and 32 games, with 72 innings pitched. In 42 career regular season games, he compiled a 3 win, 3 loss record, with a 4.90 lifetime ERA, in 86 innings pitched. After retiring as a player, he served as a scout with the Philadelphia Phillies. He later worked in the petroleum industry.
