Lawrence Goben was born in Mason County, Bath Illinois, to William H and Nancy Ellen Kirk Goben. Lawrence was the middle child of seven children born to this union. Lawrence lived his childhood in and around Bath and Kilbourne Illinois area, in 1903 he married Rosa May Lane and soon after they started their trek westward, their first son Allen Franklin was born in Missouri and their second son Kenneth James was born in Oklahoma, finally they moved to Oregon in about 1914. Lawrence and Rosa May divorced and he married Gladys V McMorris Hurley in 1935 and they lived in Cottage Grove Oregon where Gladys was a school teacher, to my knowledge Lawrence only visited Illinois one time after arriving in Oregon. In 1958 Lawrence and Gladys visited with his nephew Fred Goben in rural Bath where he farmed, this was the only time that I had the pleasure of meeting him, I did visit with Aunt Gladys(this is what I called her) in Cottage Grove Oregon later(1964) while stationed at Fort Lewis Washington, in the army. During my visit with Lawrence while he was back to Illinois, he was astounded as to how the area had changed since he left, he said that there was nothing but scrub oak trees in the area and no paved roads when he left.
