J.L. Atkins, age 81, of Bean Station, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System. He was a member of Fairview Bible Baptist Church and retired from H & G Glass Company in Surgoinsville. J.L. was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Minnie Atkins; daughter, Shelia Diane Atkins; and first wife, Betty Jean Atkins. He is survived by his wife, Loella Atkins; son, Michael Atkins; step-sons, Chuck Sumpter and Logan Sumpter; step-grandchildren, Ella Sumpter and Matthew Sumpter; great-grandchildren, Octavia, Gwenevere, and Acacia Sumpter; brothers, Dana Atkins and Albert Atkins; sister, Eva Hixson; sister-in-law, Grace Satterfield; brothers-in-law, Joe and Richard Garland; special friend, Norlia Sumpter; and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 12 – 2 p.m. Sunday, January 29th at Westside Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Tim Jones officiating. Family and friends will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, January 30th at Hamblen Memory Gardens for graveside services. Arrangements by Westside Chapel Funeral Home in Morristown.
