Fanny Whittingham and her husband Bertie Richard Whittingham lived at 61 Corporation Road in Gillingham, Kent, England. In 1928 Bertie's sister, Beatrice passed. Following her death Bertie and Fanny would raise Beatrice's three year old daughter Joan Beatrice Taylor Neice of Fanny . Fanny and Bertie had two sons which survived her. Her son Charles was serving abroad at the time of his mother's death.
On the morning of June 6th 1944 the family was asleep in their beds when the home was struck by a B26 bomber which had just suffered a mid air collision with another plane. Both Fanny and Joan perished. Fanny, initially found alive soon succumbed to her injuries.
A large civic funeral was held with many floral tributes. The Mayor of Gilligham attended.
June 6, 1944 was D-Day and USA B26 Marauders part of a large group was flying above Gillingham on a mission to France. The 42-96050 587th Bomb Squadron and 42-96263 587th Bomb Squadron were involved in the mid air collision over Gillingham at aproximately 5:05 am. Poor weather was said to have been the primary cause of the accident. Heresay testimony of civilians in the vicinity on Gillingham, Kent indicates that one aircraft was flying around beneath the overcast. The other aircraft came down out of a large black cloud and the two collided. No actual eyewitnesses were found.
The 42-96050 587th Bomb Squadron crashed into homes on Corporation Road in Gillingham, killing the entire crew and four civilians. Six homes were demolished. The 42-96263 587th Bomb Squadron crashed into an orchard at the East Court Farm in Gillingham, Kent also killing all the crew.
