Daughter of Robert and Ruth Horsley. She grew up in Ennis Creek, TX. Because of severe allergies, helping in the cotton fields with her family was limited. She became an avid reader and became the first of her siblings to earn a high school diploma. After high school she became a drafting technician. Working in a Ft. Worth factory during WWII, she drafted machine parts to be used in bomber planes, in a factory now known as Lockheed Martin. She returned to west Texas to work in Muleshoe, TX for the Bailey County Attorney as a legal secretary. It was during that time that she met Carroll Howell. They were married on April 6, 1950 in Muleshoe. Within a few years, he received a job opportunity with Transwestern Pipeline Company in Arizona. They traveled west on Route 66 and lived Leupp, AZ. They were transferred to Thoreau, NM and raised 4 children on the Navajo Reservation. She became a newspaper distributor for the Gallup Independent in Gallup, NM, driving 150 miles to bring the daily news from Gallup to Crownpoint, NM. She and Carroll moved to Belen, NM in the early 1980's where they retired. Surviving are her children, Janitha Howell, Timothy Wayne Howell (Michelle). Elesa Donham (Brent), and Rebecca Lilley (Kent); grandchildren, Robert, Christopher, Steven, Lindsay, Melissa, and Jackson; five great grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Dorothy Horsley. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 43 years, Robert Carroll Howell; three brothers and three sisters.
