After her film career ended, her family moved to West Seattle where she attended West Seattle High School, graduating in 1947 and, in 1989, she was inducted into their Hall of Fame. She attended Seattle University where she studied music and where she appeared in the university's 1947 production of Gilbert and Sullivan's "H.M.S. Pinafore."

After graduation, Preston went on to become a distinguished opera singer, performing at prestigious opera houses around the world. She was discovered at age 16 and began touring in 1949.

In 1952, at age 24, she debuted with The Metropolitan Opera touring company on a South American tour in the leading role of Mimi in "La Boheme."
