Erastus Atkinson was born in Butler County, Ohio on July 7, 1848. His family moved to Union County, Indiana when he was two years old, where he grew to manhood. When he was 13 years old, he confessed Christ as his Savior and joined the United Brethern Church in Billingsville, Indiana.

He was educated at Hartsville College, Hartsville, Indiana. At age 24 he was licensed to preach. He joined the White River Conference and then the Kansas Conference in 1881 and received his first charge as pastor of the United Brethern Church at Lawrence, Kansas in the fall of 1881. He also served on the board of Lane University.

After 4 years he was sent to Leavenworth where he served 6 years as pastor. During the following years he was in charge of the Robinson Circuit, organized a United Brethern Church in Sabetha, elected Presiding Elder of the Kansas Conference, dedicated churches in the district and elected District Superintendent.

Rev. Atkinson was married Oct. 5, 1888 to Miss Emma Wolfe at Lawrence, Kansas. They would have celebrated their golden wedding anniv. in Oct. of this year. His 3 children, Mrs. Myrtle Burgert of Sterling, Kansas, twin sons, Rev. Floyd Atkinson of Abeline, Kansas and Lloyd Atkinson of Sabetha with their mother survive, as well as 15 grandchildren. Rev. Atkinson is the last of 10 children.

Interment will be in the Sabetha Cemetery.
