Shortly after becoming head of the Roman Church, the Lombards invaded Papal territory. Adrian called on Charlemagne for assistance. The Lombards were stopped, and Adrian celebrated by striking the first papal coin. Adrian presided over the seventh general ecumenical council of the Roman Church, held in 787 in Nicaea. Upon his death, he was the second-longest serving pope, second only to St. Peter. It would be more than 1,000 years before a pope reigned longer.
