Musician. Best known as one half of the musical group, The Osborne Brothers, which he formed along with his elder brother, Bobby. An accomplished banjo player from an early age, he first entered the world of Bluegrass music while playing in Bill Monroe's Blue Grass Boys. Following the return of Bobby from service in the Korean War, the brothers joined with the legendary blue grass musician Jimmy Martin, cutting their first recorded songs for the RCA label. In 1956 the Osborne Brothers, complimented by several new additions to their lineup, were signed to MGM Records. Their first single with the label, "Ruby Are You Mad" helped bring the new group into the Bluegrass scene. Over the next three decades, the Osborne Brothers released a number of hits including staples such as "Once More," "Making Plans," and "Tennessee Hound Dog." Though not their highest charting single, 1967's recording of "Rocky Top" is perhaps the piece by which many best know the Osborne Brothers. The song which sold over 80,000 copies in its first two weeks, was later named one of Tennessee's official state songs. For their contributions to the Bluegrass and Country genre, the Osbornes were inducted into the Grand Ole Opry and the International Blue Grass Music Association Hall of Fame.
