Born in Salt Lake City to Irving Hinman and Jane Black Kilpatrick Mills on May 8, 1915, he was the fourth of ten children. He graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah.
He married Madeline Helene Merrill on December 27, 1937. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 8, 1955. They had been married for 66 years when she passed away on July 24, 2004. They raised a family which with in-laws now numbers 101. They served in the community and in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They worked in the Salt Lake Temple and filled a mission to the New York Visitors' Center. He was a High Priest and had an abiding faith in his Savior, Jesus Christ. He was a loyal employee of Chevron Oil Company for 40 years before retiring and always bought Chevron gas!
Madeline and Al lived in the same Avenue home for 62 years. They traveled extensively, entertained frequently and had many friends. Al was a good, kind man who was always there for others. He attended virtually all family events, locally and out of town. He was quiet, but we always knew he was proud of our accomplishments because he would tell his friends who would tell us. We especially appreciate the way he cared for our mother. He was active in the 10th East Senior Citizens Center. He enjoyed being with family and friends. He loved people, fishing, rides, food, the Utah Utes and his New York Yankees. He will be lovingly remembered by his children and their spouses: David and Lana Mills, Lynda and Mark Simmons, Kathie and the late David Olsen, Margaret and Ken Petersen, and John and the late Barbara Mills; 20 grandchildren (one deceased) and their spouses; 53 great-grandchildren (one deceased); and one great-great-grandson; brother, Robert K. Mills; brother-in-law, Wayne A. Wilms; and many other family and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10, 2007, at noon at the Salt Lake 21st Ward, 680 Second Avenue, Salt Lake City, Utah for Al and his daughter-in-law, Barbara Kay Bruce Mills, who died in St. Louis, Missouri on Nov. 4, 2007. Viewings will be held on Friday evening from 5-8 p.m. at Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple; and Saturday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the ward.
Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
