US Congressman. He was elected to represent Vermont's 3rd and later 1st Districts in the Thirty-first and three succeeding Congresses, he served from 1849 until his death. Born in Rutland, Vermont, he graduated from Middlebury College in 1832 and then attended the Andover Theological Seminary, where he was ordained as a Congregational minister in 1838. He served as pastor of New Haven, Vermont from 1839 to 1846, and taught at Middlebury College from 1846 to 1850. In 1848, Meacham was persuaded by friends in the Whig Party to run for the Congressional seat left vacant by the resignation of George P. Marsh, even though he had no prior political experience; he proved to be a forceful speaker on behalf of his state and was reelected to three full terms. With the dissolution of the Whigs in the mid-1850s he joined the Opposition Party. He died of a stroke in Rutland at age 46. There is a cenotaph in his memory at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
