Ethel Blanch Dutton was the eldest of six children of John Clinton Dutton Jr. & Bertha Alice Shutes. She married 9 February 1916 to William Roy Oswood (1894-1961), son of Bert W. Oswood & Sarah Loretta Runyon. Bill & Ethel had one daughter: Ruth Gwenevere, born 27 December 1916; and two granddaughters: Kay and Elaine.

In late summer 1911, Ethel's mother Bertha took the train from central Iowa to Tacoma, Washington, to visit her parents, Taylor & Dora Shutes. She took her two youngest sons with her, John & George. She took this photo of her four eldest children to show to her relatives in Tacoma. Ethel, the eldest at 13, was left responsible for the cooking and cleaning and laundry of the Dutton household, plus tending to the vegetable garden the family depended upon for food. Her sisters Greta and Lucille helped her. Ethel was also left to prepare young Wendell for his very first day of school.
