William Roy Oswood was the eldest of 13 children of Birtwell "Bert" W. Oswood & Sarah LuEtta Runyon. Bill married on February 9, 1916 at Alden, Iowa, to Ethel Blanch Dutton, daughter of John Clinton Dutton Jr. & Bertha Alice Shutes. Bill & Ethel had one daughter: Ruth Gwenevere, born 27 December 1916; and two granddaughters: Kay and Elaine.

When Bill registered for the military draft on 5 June 1917, he was 22, a farm hand, medium height, medium build, gray eyes, black hair.
