A defender, he played the majority of his career for his hometown team 1 FC Kaiserslautern, with 322 appearances with 20 goals between 1941 and 1957. He also played 22 times for Germany, including the 1954 World Cup Final vs. Hungary, nicknamed "The Miracle of Bern," which Germany won 3:2. Late in his career, he played for FC Homburg 08 and two amateur teams. He was also known as a top high-jumper and skat player. Sadly, he suffered from alcoholism, which led to the divorce from his wife, the loss of his family, and his early death from a heart attack.
