Soccer Coach and Player. Best known for being the coach of the 1954 FIFA World Cup Champions Germany, he led that team from 1936 to 1964. His career as a player lasted from 1914 to 1930 for his hometown Waldhof Mannheim and VfR Mannheim as well as Tennis Borussia Berlin, with 186 goals in 236 games playing as a striker. He was selected for the German National Team three times, scoring two goals. In 1930, he became player coach of Tennis Borussia Berlin and in 1932 the assistant coach of Germany. As coach of Germany he led them to a 3-2 victory in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final vs Hungary, which was later dubbed the "Miracle of Bern". Germany also played in the 1938, 1958, and 1962 FIFA World Cups under his leadership, finishing fourth in 1958. He was known for his pithy, humorous quotes about the game, such as "The ball is round" and "The game lasts 90 minutes". He was selected to the German Sports Hall of Fame in 2008, which caused some controversy as he had been a member of the Nazi Party, joining in 1933.
