Joel Spector, 67, of Maplewood Dr., New Milford, CT, devoted husband of Rowena (Adsit) Spector, died at the Regional Hospice Center for Comfort & Healing in Danbury on Oct. 13, 2016. Born in Cuba, Jan. 10, 1949, he was the son of Matilde (Rosen) Spector of Flushing, NY and the late Isaac Spector. He was the beloved father of Max, Ari, Jacob, and Saskia and was the dear brother of Dorana Jurkevich of Flushing, NY.
Joel graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology and attended the Art Students League. He received his MFA at WCSU in 2005. Joel began in the field of fashion illustration, then on to general illustration. His work has been published in books, children's books, magazines, newspapers, advertising and annual reports.
Joel was a friend to many and beloved by all. Active in his community, he served as Board Member of Temple Sholom, a member of the New Milford Commission of the Arts and the New Milford Film Commission. He was a dedicated teacher at the Art League of Long Island and the Pastel Society of America. As a member of The Painting Group of Manhattan he studied under Aaron Shikler and David Levine. His work has been shown in numerous galleries and museums throughout the country. He painted the mural of literary figures that graces the entrance of Sarah Noble School.
Funeral Services were held at Temple Sholom, 122 Kent Rd., New Milford on SUNDAY morning, Oct. 16 at 11 a.m. with Interment Services to follow at the New Milford Center Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be sent to Temple Sholom of New Milford or The Regional Hospice Center for Healing in Danbury. Funeral Arrangements in care of Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven.
