‘Wilfred Gaffney aged 16, arrived in Canada on October 1, 1927 aboard the Montclare destined for St. George’s home in Ottawa. The UK outgoing passenger list indicates that his passage was paid by the Catholic Emigration Association, Coleshill, Birmingham. The Canadian incoming passenger list states Wilfred’s occupation had been mining prior to his departure, and gives his next of kin as his father J.E. Gaffney, 1 West Terrace, Evenwood Durham. A search of the records show that Wilfred’s parents were John Edward Gaffney and Hannah Mary Harding, and both were still alive when Wilfred immigrated ( both appear on the 1939 Register and lived to old age).

Sadly, Wilfred drowned at Pakenham, Ontario on June 11, 1929, aged 18. His body was claimed by his Irish born Grandmother Bridget (Carabine) Harding, who had immigrated to Scranton, Pennsylvania with some of her children. Wilfred was buried on June 17, 1929 At St. Catherine’s Cemetery, Moscow, Southeast of Scranton in Lackawanna County.’
