Mrs. Mary Lou Sowell of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Wednesday, January 8, 2020, at her residence in the Norwood community at the age of 60 years, 10 days.

A lifelong area resident, Mary Lou was born December 29, 1959, in San Augustine County to parents Elzie E. Evans and Lura Mae (Adkins) Evans. She was a lady of strong faith and a member of Clawson Assembly of God. Mary Lou and Ricky Sowell were married on June 4, 1977.

Mary Lou dedicated a large part of her life to helping students and young people. She had worked near 20 years as a paraprofessional at West Sabine Elementary School in Pineland, primarily working with the computer lab and the office. Mary Lou had formerly worked with the Broaddus School District, as well.

Her survivors include her husband of more than 42 years, Ricky Sowell of San Augustine County, Texas; her son, Michael Sowell and wife Kim of San Augustine, Texas; daughter, Kayla Powell and husband Tim of Rosevine, Texas; grandsons, Trenton Sowell, Ransom Sowell, Ethan Powell, and Eli Powell; and her siblings, Elsie Watson of San Augustine, Texas, Nolan Evans of San Augustine, Texas, Jimmy Evans and wife Pam of Broaddus, Texas, Debbie McDaniel of San Augustine, Texas, Virginia Bunting of San Augustine, Texas, Donna Sensat and husband Billy of Bronson, Texas, Rita Dailey and husband Ronnie of San Augustine, Texas, Peggy Foster of San Augustine, Texas, Steve Evans of San Augustine, Texas, and Bobby Evans of San Augustine, Texas. She also loved her "bonus family," as a mom, Brenda Springer, and as sisters, Patti Dailey, Benje Holloway, Carole Oliver, Cassy Whitsitt, and Sharon Taylor, and many more.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elzie E. Evans; mother, Lura Mae Adkins Evans; sister, Laura Faye Evans Eddings; nephew, Roger McDaniel; niece, Winter Foster; sister-in-law, Lue Nan Parker Evans; and brothers-in-law, Johnny Watson and Robert McDaniel.

Funeral services are set for 2:30 p.m. Sunday, January 12, 2020, at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine, with Bro. Kevin Poage and Bro. Skipper Eberlan officiating. Interment will follow at Sowell Cemetery in the Norwood community.

Visitation will be held Saturday, January 11, 2020, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel.

Pallbearers: Richard Flowers, Rusty Taylor, Rickey Oliver, Jeff Boyd, John Toole, Jamie Sowell, David Murphy, and Bob Stanley. Honorary pallbearers: Billy Whitsitt and Joey Holloway.
