Notes of Helen Lovett Teague
James Bryson Starr was known as "Uncle Jim" to my stepmother, Hulan Starr Lovett. (My birth mother was the granddaughter of James Bryson Starr, and Hulan was the granddaughter of his brother John Wiley Starr. My mother and Hulan were second cousins, so when I lost my mother at 9 years old, I still had a relative to care for me and my father.)

James Bryson married Caroline Reeves on 27 Oct 1880 in Marshall, Harrison County, Texas. James Bryson and Caroline, along with their children, moved to Jack County, Texas and opened a store at Squaw Mountain. Jim also worked in a coal mine near there. After James Bryson's brother John Wiley lost his wife, Betty, John and their seven children moved to Squaw Mountain, also. These moves were made around 1890 and came about because both brothers had tuberculosis and had been told to go to a higher and drier climate.

"Uncle Jim," as James Bryson was known by all his friends and neighbors, moved to Shannon, Texas after Caroline died in 1901, and lived with his daughter Sudie, who had married the same month that her mother died. Then they all moved to the Bowie area. He later moved to New Mexico and lived with his daughter, Cammie Holcomb. (J.B. Rogers - who was raised by his aunt Sudie Starr Stevens - remembers that in the early 20's they put James Bryson on a cot and took him to the train station in Bowie to go live with his daughter, Cammie, in New Mexico because of the dry climate there. However, he was too sick by that time and died shortly thereafter.)

James Bryson Starr is buried somewhere near Corona, NM we think. There was a little ranching community named Lon about 40 miles SE of Corona that completely disappeared by 1938 because of the long drought. We think Cammie and David lived around Lon during those years. (Ira Stevens, Sudie's son, told his son, Glenn, these things.)

Cammie had 9 or l0 children. Effie, Lethaday, Curtis, Roy & others.

Uncle Jim and Caroline also had a son, Joe, that died about age 17.

The entire Starr family were devout Christians and belonged to the Pentecostal Assembly of God denomination. Allie Star, wife of Caroline's nephew Joe Starr, once told me that "Aunt Caroline got so excited in church one day that she was jumping around shouting and her long black hair came loose and fell down around her shoulders."

Side note: James Bryson (Uncle Jim) named a daughter Cammie Dell, probably after his father's youngest daughter by his second wife, Amanda Dell, who was 2 years old when Cammie was born.

Other interesting family facts - Carolina was a Reeves. Her brother William T "Troy" Reeves married Lissy Phillips. Lissy was a sister to Arty Phillips who married Daisy Starr, daughter of John Wiley Starr. Another sister of Carolina and Troy Reeves, Sarah, married Jim Bob Smith, the brother of Jack Smith who married Nonie Starr. (All in Harrison County, Texas) Information from Lula Mae Smith Knoble.

Betty and Carolina (sisters-in-law) both supposedly came from Panola County and both were part Indian. Betty was half Choctaw. (from Lula Mae) Information is still missing on the pedigree of Carolina Reeves, who was said to be part Cherokee.
