Dewitt (no middle name) Welch was the son of Charles Ibsen and Cordelia Elizabeth Welch and was a brother to Armour, Ora and Edessa and a half-brother to Charles' four children by his first marriage.

Dewitt was born in 1895 and Charles died in 1899 so his older brother, John Byrd, and Dewitt had a close relationship as he grew up in the Ebony area.

Dewitt married Nina Lois Burrows when he was twenty years of age and she at only fifteen. The marriage did not last and Dewitt lived with his sister, Armour Philen and her husband, William Joseph Philen, before going into the Army.

Dewitt served as a private in the 43rd Infantry during World War I and the war ended just as he was about to be shipped overseas.

He returned to Ebony and married Claudie Lavada Johnson on October 30, 1920 in Brownwood. They returned to Ebony where he bought and operated the grocery while serving as the postmaster for almost two years. After selling the family farm, He and Claudie moved to Brownwood.

They were the parents of nine children (seven who lived to adulthood) while Dewitt spent most of his time in farming. Dewitt spent almost two years in the Civilian Conservaton Corps in 1939 - 41. Dewitt had a "green thumb" and loved to plant crops just to see them growing. After retiring and caring for a good garden, he even planted some "long staple" cotton seeds he got from his son-in-law just to see how well he could grow the plants. He was successful, even though noone could use the two or three sacks of cotton he produced. Dewitt had a highly developed sense of honesty and sincerely believed that 'one's word' should be better than any contract.

Dewitt Welch died on January 2, 1964 and is buried in the Ebony Cemetery with many of his relatives.
