Statesman, 5th Prime Minister of Italy. He held the post twice. First, from 24 March 1863 – 28 September 1864 and second, from 10 July 1873 – 25 March 1876 . Prior to becoming prime minister he served as minister of public works but later resigned and joined the Piedmontese army as captain on the general staff. He was then appointed Piedmontese minister of the interior and subsequently chosen to be minister of finance. He is best remembered for establishing harmonious relations between Italy, Austria and Germany and for reforming the naval and military administration. Before leaving office he was able to balance the budget.
