Leo Kirstine was the fourth child of Mary nee Anthony and Albert Kirstine. He was born on the 14th of July 1908 in Fairview, Madison County, Nebraska, USA and grew up Fairview, Madison County, Nebraska and Spencer, Boyd, Nebraska where his father farmed. He moved with the family to Ord, Antelope County, Nebraska where at the age of 21 he worked as a farm labourer. He travelled to Ramsey, Anoka County, Minnesota, where he was working and died far too young from pneumonia at the tender age of 26.
