James Cook was born in Illinois to John Cooper Cook and Jane Howell, both of Illinois.
After James' birth, the family moved to northern Missouri on the Missouri River,
where they stayed until James was about eight or nine years old.
At that time they decided to move to Dallas County, Texas where they took up a section of land,
consisting of six hundred and forty acres. The mother, Jane Howell Cook, died when James was twelve years old.
After her death, James' father, John Cooper Cook, married the widow of Tommy Mayes.
John Cooper Died in 1860."
James John Cook married Sarah Elizabeth Mayes in 1853 and moved to Parker County, Texas
and homesteaded six miles from Weatherford. James was prospering and left for market with cattle to get supplies
for a cotton gin. A neighbor who had gone with him, returned home with apparent prosperity.
He had no logical reason as to why James did not return with him Although foul play was suspected, nothing could be proved and the widow and her family were left without support.
After several moves, the family returned to Missouri.
By all accounts James John Cook was murdered without enough evidence to charge the neighbor as a body could not be found and despite the neighbors new found wealth.
