Bruce Garver, the manager of this Memorial to PVT. John Yates (1851 to June 14, 1916), thanks the Hamilton County (Ohio) Genealogical Society for having provided information essential to his having written on Sept. 26, 2023, the following first draft of a "bio" of PVT. John Yates whose Find a Grave Memorial was originally created by K. Guy. Bruce Garver would appreciate receiving additional suggestions for improving and enlarging this "bio":

BIRTH & PARENTS: John Yates (1851 to June 14, 1916) was born during the year 1851 in the state of Kentucky to Kentucky-born parents who have not yet been identified by name. Not yet known is whether John Yates was born free or born into slavery, though an absence of evidence suggests the latter, Kentucky having been one of four slave states that remained loyal to and within the United States during the Civil War. (That John's parents were born in Kentucky is confirmed by the 1880 U. S. Federal Census).

CIVIL WAR MILITARY SERVICE TO THE UNION: During and immediately after the Civil War, PVT. John Yates served from June 10, 1864, to April 2, 1867, in Company "A" of the 114th Regiment of U. S. Colored Infantry. He is one of many American Civil War veterans honored by having had his name inscribed upon the African-American Civil War Soldier Memorial in Washington D.C.

POST-WAR FAMILY LIFE: After his honorable discharge from military service to the United States, on April 2, 1867, John Yates became a resident citizen of Cincinnati, seat of Hamilton County, Ohio, where, circa 1873, John Yates wed Emma King whose parents' first names have not yet been identified. (This marriage is documented by the Franklin County, Ohio, marriage application of Sept. 30, 1923, by John and Martha's youngest son, Albert Yates, who obtained authorization to wed Emma Okes. A photo of the original application may be viewed in the "Ohio, U.S., County Marriage Records, 1774-1993"@Ancestry.com.) The 1880 U. S. Federal Census recorded John Yates and Emma (King) Yates, aged twenty-nine, to be residing at 300 Spring Street in Avondale, a suburb of Cincinnati, in Hamilton County, Ohio, with their three children: John, aged nine; Clara, aged three; and Albert, at the age of one year. At that time, John Yatesworked as a "coachman" to earn a living for his family. On August 8, 1890, John's application 941.795 for an invalid's pension received approval by Certificate 910.136. John's application states that he had enlisted for miltiary service under the alias of "John Mauppin". (See attached photo # 4).

John Yates died of nephritis on June 14, 1916, at the Ohio Soldiers' Home in Dayton, seat of Montgomery County, Ohio, and was interred several days later in Cincinnati, seat of Hamilton County, Ohio, at Wesleyan Cemetery in its Colored Section, Row 09, Grave 03.
At the time of his death, John's widow, Martha (King) Yates was still residing at the family home on 364 Kendall Place in Cincinnati, Ohio. The fact that she is not interred at Cincinnati's Weslayan Cemetery suggests that she may have remarried after the death of her husband, PVT. John Yates.
