The Rev. Bernard Emmett Joyce Sr., 82, of 4701 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett, died Saturday, June 17, 2000, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.
He was the husband of Chrystal T. Joyce for 58 years.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1917, in Patrick County, Va., to the late Peter E. Joyce and the late Minnie Wright Joyce.
He owned and operated Joyce's Food Market for a number of years and was a building contractor from 1965-1982.
In 1981, Joyce was ordained as a minister. He was first pastor of Fairyway Baptist Church where he served from 1976-1986 before retiring.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Lucille J. Koger, and one brother, Carl L. Joyce.
Survivors include Chrystal T. Joyce of the home; two daughters, Gloria J. Foley and Patricia J. Adams, both of Bassett; two sons Bernard E. (Bernie) Joyce Jr. and James D. (Jimmy) Joyce, both of Bassett; one sister, Mary Francis Bower, and one brother, Troy J. Joyce, both of Bassett; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
The family will receive friends at Orchard Drive Baptist Church today from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home on Stones Dairy Road.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday at Orchard Drive Baptist Church with the Revs. Daryl Joyce and Ivey Adams and Chris Marshall officiating.
A time of worship will be held during the 8 p.m. visitation by a former pastor, Carroll Clark.
Memorials may be made to the Van Fund at Orchard Drive Baptist Church, 228 Orchard Drive, Bassett, Va. 24055.
