Son of Edward McGarvey and Ruby Blue Summers.

A transcript for Woodland Cemetery used to be on the Lawrence County website, but has since been removed. That reference stated the plot location was "7126". However, member Linda Frazier Meredith provided an update for this to Section 16 lot 443.

His year of birth is in doubt. Ohio birth records show his sister born on 17 Apr 1895, but he is not listed on that page of county births. The 1900 census gives born in Apr 1897, but his WW I draft registration has 17 Apr 1895.

Brothers Jump Into River; One Drowned

Special to The Courier-Journal.

Ashland. Ky., June 25. -- Eddis McGarvey, about 23 years old, of Ironton, Ohio, was drowned here to-night. He had been in this city with his brother, Gilbert McGarvey, also of Ironton, and the two had started for the ferry boat to go home.

Both jumped from the ferry into the river, intending to swim the riyer (sic), when Eddis McGarvey was drowned. His brother was rescued by John Wallace, Ironton, who was on the ferry.

McGarvey had just been released from the army. He was married.

Notes: This would likely mean the men were on the Ohio River, which divides Ashland, KY from Ohio; with Ironton being about 5 miles to the northwest. Additionally, prior to this article, I was not aware of a marriage. His death certificate is ambiguous regarding his marital status, with a line drawn following the "married" option, not a check mark nor circle.

UPDATES: Feb 2019 - changed plot information. Dec 2020 - corrected month of death. Apr 2024 - added news article and additional date of birth information.
