Gazette Jan 6 1929: Funeral services for Uncle Benny Smith were held on Saturday (5th). GAR took part in the services. Cause of death- pneumonia.

Next of kin- Francis White, Woodland Park.

The Colorado Veterans Graves Registration show he enlisted on Oct 25 1864 and was discharged on June 15 1865 from Co C 43rd IN INF. This document gives his birth year as 1846, though some census records show he was born in 1838. This early birth year may have been a fib, used when he enlisted the first time in 1864 at the age of 18.

He then served in the 6th Indiana Infantry for 3 years from 1867 to 1870, being discharged at Fort Sill, Indian Territory.
