Daniel Doty is remembered as the steadfast grandson who stood guard--with a shotgun--over the grave of his grandmother, Nancy Kerlin Barnett (1793-1831) when the county wanted to move her grave to make road improvements. The renowned "grave in the middle of the road" remains in its original Johnson County location.

The Franklin Democrat, (Franklin, Indiana), Thursday, June 28, 1934
Daniel G. Doty, son of John and Nancy D. Barnett Doty, died at his home south of Franklin Tuesday morning at the age of 88 years. He was the last of eleven children.
The tragic deaths of two of his three children contributed greatly to his failing health. He had been an Invalid for more than a year.
Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at the residence. The Rev. George Clark will have charge of the services. Burial will be made in Greenlawn cemetery.
Mr. Doty was born in the western part of the county in 1846, on February 10th. He was married to Angelina Brown on May 24, 1870, and he lived in Union township until 1900. He then lived five years in Franklin before moving to his present residence.
Three daughters were born to this union. They were Mrs. Thomas Blackwell, Mrs. O. L. Deer and Mrs. Albert White. Mrs. White was killed in an accident at Amity in 1923. Five years later, Mrs. Blackwell met her death in an accident in Franklin.
Mr. Doty was a member of the Grove Christian church in Morgantown and he transferred his membership to the Tabernacle Christian church when he moved here. He was one of the oldest members of the Masonic lodge and was a charter member of the Union Village lodge.
The widow and one daughter survive. There are six grandchildren, Hazael and Kenneth Blackwell and Dorothy, Ruth and Marylynn Deer, of Johnson county, and Claris Deer, Pekin, Illinois. There are also three great-grandchildren, Richard Brown Blackwell and Barbara Ann and Leah Joyce Deer.
