Son to Elza/Ezra and Hanna Montford Smith Reece. He was a Civil War Veteran. William enlisted in Onslow Co. 1/28/1862 and mustered into G Company, NC 3rd Infantry. He was wounded 5/2/1863 at Chancellorsville,Va. He returned 8/15/1863. He was wounded again 5/5/1864 at Wilderness Va. Hospitalized 3/15/1865 at Richmond with Parotitis. Captured3/23/1863 while in the hospital. Confined 3/3/1865 in Libby Prison, Richmond,Va. Then Transferred to Newport News,Va.4/14/1865. He took the oath of Allegiance 6/30/1865. He was released 6/30/1865.

He was a also a Fisherman and a Cooper in Wilmington NC, as well as a Rice Field Hand in his life.

His wife was Mary Elizabeth Wilson Reece m.10 Jan 1854. Witnessed by Jasper Ethridge. Their children were William Ervin Reece b. 1858, Elisha Walter Reece b.1862, Fannie Virginia Reece b.1865, Robert MacWilson Reece b.1872, William "Claude" Reece b.1878.He was originally buried in the Aman Cemetery.
