Ray Hawkins of Dallas, Texas was born on March 30, 1932 and passed away November 16, 2015. He graduated from North Dallas High School and served in the Coast Guard for three years. He worked for the Post Office and Dallas Power & Light before joining the Police Department in June 1953. He proudly served the citizens of Dallas, Texas, with the Dallas Police Department. On Nov. 22, 1963, Ray Hawkins had just finished working a traffic accident when he learned a police officer had been shot and killed in Oak Cliff. He joined the hunt for the shooter, a pursuit that led to his place in history as the officer who handcuffed Lee Harvey Oswald. Ray retired April 6, 1982 after 26 years of service. In 1964, he married Jean Bailey, who died in 2006. His son, Mark Hawkins, died in 2009. .
