David McCambridge Abel Seaman was the son of Annie McCambridge of Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

He fought in WW11 in the Merchant Navy on the ship S.S. Empire Surf (Sunderland). He was killed in action and his body never recovered.

At 02.54 hours on 14 Jan 1942, U-43 attacked the convoy ON-55 south of Iceland and sank the Empire Surf (Master Albert Sandham). At 03.04 hours, the U-boat attacked again and heard a heavy detonation after 40 seconds (about 600 metres), but a few minutes later was unable to see the target. The KTB has the marginal comment Apparently not a hit..

The master, 37 crew members and nine gunners from the Empire Surf were lost. Six crew members were picked up by HMS Alisma (K 185) (LtCdr M.G. Rose) and landed at Londonderry.

David is remembered on: The Tower Hill Memorial which commemorates men and women of the Merchant Navy and Fishing Fleets who died in both World Wars and who have no known grave. It stands on the south side of the garden of Trinity Square, London, close to The Tower of London.

David is listed on panel # 46.
