FORMER WELL KNOWN RESIDENT OF THIS CITY, KILLED BY SPEEDING AUTO IN INDIANAPOLIS
One man was fatally injured and another was seriously hurt when the two were run down last evening at Senate and Indiana Avenues by an automobile driven by Howard Bryant, colored, 311 1/2 Indiana Avenue, who says he is an employee of the Indianapolis Motor Sales Company. The negro is held and charged with manslaughter.
The victims are Alonzo Barnett, 45 years old, 30 th Stewart block, died in City Hospital shortly after accident.
Leonard Drumheller, 26 years old, Craigville, Va., seriously injured, was taken to City Hospital.
The two men were struck as they were about to board a Northwestern street car.
According to witnesses, Bryant was driving at a high rate of speed.
The negro abandoned his machine following the accident and attempted to escape, but was captured by the police after an exciting chase. Bicycleman Schlangen, who was on the street car, leaped off and pursued the negro eastward on Vermont Street. He was unable to overtake the driver, however, pressed an automobile into service to continue the chase. After the trail had led more than four squares by a devious route, the bicycleman chased Bryan into the arms of Mounted Officer Johnstone.
Bryan asserted that a man had threatened him with a revolver, and that was the reason he fled. His statement, however, is disputed by Schlangen, who says that Bryant had been drinking.
Bryant was charged with assault and battery with intent to kill pending the outcome of the injuries to the two men, and when Barnett died he was "reslated" and charged with manslaughter. His bond was placed at $5,000.
According to Bicycleman Iriek and Kitzmiller, Bryant was going southeast on Indiana Avenue. Northwestern car No. 545, in charge Clark A. Beatty, motorman, and was inbound and stopped at the corner to the let Barnett and Drumheller get on.
According to the street car crew , Bryant was going at a speed of approximately 30 miles an hour. When he saw the street car, he swerved his automobile and dashed into Barnett and Drumheller. Both were knocked down and two of the wheels of the automobile passed over Barnett's body.
The police have never been able to "make" a case of manslaughter against drivers of automobiles who have been responsible for fatal accidents, but they declare they will make every effort to convict Bryant. Time after time the police have " slated " automobilists , but have always met defeat in the courts. All the officers concerned in the investigation of the accident last night collected much evidence, which will go to show that Bryant was at fault, they say.
The body of the deceased was brought to Franklin, Wednesday morning and taken to the home of his sister,
Mrs. S.A. Trout, where funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock.
