Mary Wilson Masters was the daughter of Thomas Wilson and Priscilla (Kent) Wilson;

Granddaughter of Joseph Wilson and Frances (Hilleary) Wilson; Absalom Kent and Mary (Wadsworth) Kent;

Great-granddaughter of Lt. Col. Thomas Hilleary and Eleanor (Sprigg) Hilleary, Henry Kent and Martha (Brasseur/Brashears) Kent, William Wadsworth and Elizabeth (Claggett) Wadsworth;

Great-great-granddaughter of Thomas Sprigg and Eleanor (Nuthall) Sprigg, Benois Brasseur and Mary (Richford) Brasseur, Richard Wadsworth and Susannah Wadsworth, Capt. Thomas Claggett and Mary (Nutter) Hooper Claggett.

Great-great-great-granddaughter of John Nuthall and Eleanor (Bacon) Nuthall.

"The Maryland Ancestry of Edgar Lee Masters" by Charles Burgess (The Great Lakes Review):
Mary Willson Masters, wife of Robert, was a sister of Frances Willson who married her cousin Nathan Masters, brother of Robert. They were daughters of Thomas Willson (the son of Thomas Joseph Willson and Frances Hilleary, daughter of Thomas Hilleary) and wife Priscilla Kent. This seems to be confirmed by a number of DNA results showing Mary Willson Masters' descendants match Kent, Hilleary, and Clagett descendants.

"Masters Family" by Brenda Bova states that Mary Willson Masters "died after 1773 in Maryland.

"Masters Family History (1989) by Jack Masters does not give a death date but lists four of her sons:
1. William Masters
2. Notley Masters
3. Nathan Masters "Born in Frederick Co., MD, Died in Marshall Co., WV."
4. Hillery Masters

There is strong evidence that Mary Masters, widow, married about 1773 to a (Jacob?) Mills and moved with her son Nathan to Ohio Co., VA. and Mason Co., KY where she died in 1804. Mary Masters Mills moved west into Washington Co., PA and Ohio County, VA. (which are adjacent) and eventually into Kentucky. with these children:
1. Nathan Masters of Ohio Co, VA (now Marshall Co, W.V.) who m. possibly Cloe (and he appears to be #3 above)
2. Mary Masters m. (1773 in Frederick Co, MD) Jeremiah Riggs
3. Another daughter (possibly Chloe) m. John Riggs of Mason Co. or Lewis Co., KY
4. Another daughter (possibly Mary Ann) m. Thomas McGinnis of Mason Co, KY
5. Malinda Masters who m. George Mefford
6. Possibly Lot Masters, Revolutionary War soldier in Washington Co, PA killed by Indians 1790 near Mefford's Station, Mason Co, KY.

Most of these were listed as heirs of "MARY MILLS, formerly MARY MASTERS" in Mason County, Kentucky Deedbook 1803-1806:
19 July 1804: " John Riggs, Jeremiah Riggs, Nathan Masters - the said John and Jeremiah in right of their wives, and the said Nathan in his own right became entitled on the death of Mary Mills, formerly Mary Masters, mother of the wives of John and Jeremiah and of Nathan - to one fifth each of a negro woman named Mary and her children, three of which were born before the death of Mary Mills, and one since, in possession of George Mefford and Thomas McGinnis both of whom in right of their wives claim also one fifth of the said negroes.

Whereas, George Mefford, willing to purchase claim of John Riggs, Jeremiah Riggs and Nathan Masters so they (by their attny William Riggs) convey to George Mefford all their rights in the negroes for $450.00

Wt: John Chambers
Clerk: Joseph Briggs"

It is not particularly unusual that sons William, Notley and Hillery or their heirs were omitted from this settlement since they did not move with them but migrated into the Carolinas, and perhaps because they had received substantial legacies and plantations from their father 30 years earlier. But Mary possibly could have been a second wife of Robert Masters and stepmother of William, Notley and Hillery.
