Stefan Jażdżyński was a highly-decorated military hero of the Polish-Soviet War. From 1919-1921 the war pitted Soviet Russia and Soviet Ukraine against the Second Polish Republic and the Ukrainian People's Republic over control of an area equivalent to today's Ukraine and parts of modern-day Belarus.
He was born in Piotrków Trybunalski, Piotrków, Łódź, Polska (central Poland). From 1897-1904 he attended the School of Economics in Lodz. In 1905 he was arrested for revolutionary activities and sent to Chelyabinsk, Russia. He escaped, taking refuge in a forest. He then worked as a warehouse man in a mine. He entered military school and graduated into the Polish Army in 1914.
During the Polish-Soviet war, Captain Jażdżyński commanded the III Battalion. He received many praises for his outstanding leadership and contributions of combat actions, especially in the capture of Lida in May 1919, during the battle of Krzywica and the defense of Vilnius in July 1919. During the battles of Wilejka, he took temporary command of the regiment in place of the injured Colonel Zulauf. Then he became senior commander of the 4th regiment in Kielce. He was promoted to Major and commander at Vilnius.
He retired due to health in Aug 1931. He died in Warsaw on 21 Sep 1938, and was buried in Kielce.
Decorations: Virtuti Militari, 5th Class (Poland's highest military honor); SC; KW (4 times); Polonia Resituta, 4th Class (posthumously).
He married Maria Chlebowska and they had four children: Wieslaw, Jerzy, Janina and Tadeusz.
